Knowledge spillovers and science parks in China

This paper examines the capacity of science and technology parks (STPs) in China to generate and absorb knowledge spillovers. We measure inter-STP and intra-STP knowledge spillovers for the period from 2001 to 2018 by using patent citations. We match 22,617 patent citations to patents that were applied for at the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) by listed firms with similar non-patent citations. Our findings indicate that STPs emit more knowledge spillovers than non-STPs. Spillovers occur more between STPs than within STPs. Knowledge spillovers diminish with distance between cited and citing patent. STPs generate relatively less spillovers in high-tier cities than in low-tier cities.

Pierre Mohnen教授是联合国大学创新与技术经济研究院研究员，马斯特里赫特大学荣休教授，同时在瑞士苏黎世联邦理工大学、英国牛津大学任兼职教授、中国人民大学首批“新奥”讲席教授。Mohnen教授毕业于比利时鲁汶大学和美国纽约大学，研究专注于研发、创新、生产率和增长问题，以及创新与竞争力评估，环境与社会政策等。
